Markup for footnote/annotation in XHTML 2

Hi!

What would be a good way to markup footnotes in XHTML2? A sample
scenario document may look like this:

   "This happened in Japan (1)"

   - snip body of text -

   "(1) Japan is a country..."

The specification mentions the value "note" for the role attribute
(see [1]). Do I interpret it correctly that this could be used in the
scenario above?
