Will spacing issue after italics EVER be addressed?

It's hard to believe that by 2006 there has been no manner of ensuring that
extra space in inserted after an italicized word in HTML text.

This seems like it would be a simple matter. In my own use of HTML, I
manually insert a space, but millions of sites on the Web do not, which
makes text often difficult to read when italics are frequently used.

I didn't know where else to air this little 10-year-old beef of mine...
