I'm sure this is a rather old discussion, but I found no recent posting 
in the mailing list, so I wanted to ask for the current state of the 
"start" attribute in <ol>s or the "value" in <li>s.

The last thing I read was that they should be dropped in XHTML1.1, but I 
think this will be a mistake. Actually it's a question of logical 
structure, if a list starts with a certain value inequal to 1, and not 
of style (as it would be in the future, when the only possibility is to 
apply the CSS "counter" property to the list). E.g., if you have a 
search engine presenting you the 2nd 50 of 500 results, the list should 
*logically* start with 51.
